Der von Donald Trump unterst\u00fctzte Republikaner Andy Barr hat sich in Kentucky in der parteiinternen Wahl durchgesetzt und damit den Weg f\u00fcr die Nachfolge von Mitch McConnell in den US-Senat ge\u00f6ffnet. Barr setzte sich im Rennen um das Mandat gegen den fr\u00fcheren Generalstaatsanwalt Daniel Cameron durch.<\/p>\n

Wahl in Kentucky: Barr gewinnt republikanische Vorwahl<\/h2>\n

  1. Am Dienstag gewann Andy Barr die republikanische Senatsvorwahl in Kentucky.<\/li>\n
  2. Im hart umk\u00e4mpften Wettbewerb profitierte Barr dabei von der ausdr\u00fccklichen Unterst\u00fctzung durch Pr\u00e4sident Donald Trump.<\/li>\n
  3. Barr wird damit als klarer Favorit gelten, um in dem stark republikanisch gepr\u00e4gten Bundesstaat den Sitz von Mitch McConnell zu \u00fcbernehmen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Barr, der das Gebiet um Lexington im US-Repr\u00e4sentantenhaus vertritt, konnte Daniel Cameron besiegen. Cameron hatte zwar 2023 die Gouverneursvorwahl in Kentucky gewonnen, war jedoch im Anschluss an die Wahl gegen Gouverneur Andy Beshear unterlegen. F\u00fcr Cameron war es die dritte landesweite Kandidatur; zudem war es seine erste ohne die formelle R\u00fcckendeckung durch McConnell. Cameron hatte w\u00e4hrend seines gesamten Wahlkampfs wiederholt kritisiert, dass McConnell nicht hinter ihm stehe.<\/p>\n

    Im Vorwahlkampf musste Barr au\u00dferdem gegen eine finanzstarke Konkurrenz antreten: Nate Morris, ein Unternehmer, der Unterst\u00fctzung von Charlie Kirk sowie von Donald Trump Jr. erhielt. Dar\u00fcber hinaus wurde Morris auch finanziell von Elon Musk gef\u00f6rdert. Morris griff in seiner Kampagne McConnell besonders scharf an und stellte Barr sowie Cameron, die beide Verbindungen zu McConnell haben, als \u201eMarionetten\u201c des Senators dar. Begleitend setzten seine Unterst\u00fctzer nach eigenen Angaben \u00fcber einen l\u00e4ngeren Zeitraum erhebliche Mittel in Fernsehwerbung ein, in der Barr vorgehalten wurde, bei Einwanderungsfragen zu nachgiebig zu sein und nicht ausreichend auf Linie mit Trumps politischem Kurs zu stehen.<\/p>\n

    In den letzten Monaten des Rennens verlor Morris\u2019 Kampagne jedoch sichtbar an Dynamik. Schlie\u00dflich stieg er aus dem Wettbewerb aus. Trump sagte daraufhin zu, Morris f\u00fcr eine noch nicht n\u00e4her bestimmte diplomatische Aufgabe vorzuschlagen.<\/p>\n

    Der Weg zur Trump-Unterst\u00fctzung war zugleich ein Test der politischen Loyalit\u00e4t innerhalb der Republikaner in Kentucky. Laut Angaben aus dem Umfeld der Landespartei sollte die Entscheidung \u00fcber den R\u00fcckhalt durch Trump den Ausgang der Vorwahl im tiefroten Bundesstaat nahezu vorzeichnen. In diesem Prozess warben die Kandidaten intensiv mit ihrer N\u00e4he zum Pr\u00e4sidenten und grenzten sich zugleich von beiden innerparteilichen Gegenspielern ab: Mitch McConnell auf der einen Seite und Rep. Thomas Massie auf der anderen, die jeweils als Trump-Gegner aus unterschiedlichen Richtungen der Partei beschrieben werden.<\/p>\n

    Im Unterschied zu Cameron und Morris fielen Barrs kritische Aussagen \u00fcber McConnell vergleichsweise zur\u00fcckhaltend aus. Das half Barr dabei, in den Augen von einflussreichen Geldgebern und parteipolitischen Akteuren in Kentucky weiter akzeptiert zu bleiben. Diese sch\u00e4tzen McConnell als langj\u00e4hrigen F\u00fchrungsakteur der republikanischen Senatoren weiterhin, was Barrs Position in der Partei stabilisierte.<\/p>\n

    Nach Einsch\u00e4tzung vieler Beobachter zahlten sich diese Verbindungen fr\u00fch aus: Barr konnte bis April sowohl bei den Umfragewerten als auch beim Spendenaufkommen einen Vorsprung festigen. Dadurch wurde der Boden f\u00fcr eine formelle Unterst\u00fctzung durch Trump bereitet.<\/p>\n

    Am Montag \u00e4u\u00dferte sich Trump \u00f6ffentlich zu Barr. Er schrieb, er kenne den Kandidaten gut und Barr sei eine Stimme, auf die man sich verlassen k\u00f6nne, weil er wisse, \u201ewas es braucht, um Dinge voranzubringen\u201c und damit \u201eAmerika gro\u00dfartig zu machen\u201c.<\/p>\n

    In der allgemeinen Wahl im November wird Barr voraussichtlich gegen einen der beiden demokratischen Herausforderer antreten: entweder den fr\u00fcheren Abgeordneten Charles Booker oder die fr\u00fchere Marine Amy McGrath. Beide hatten in Kentucky bereits die letzten beiden Senatswahlen verloren.
